API Evangelist/Developer Advocate

Veracity Consulting Group (VCG), a RGP company, is a global, digital consulting firm headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. What started in 2015 as a small group of consultant trailblazers has quickly transformed into a fast-growing firm innovating fortune 500s that you see today.

Our team is made up of technologists, strategists, and creative problem solvers who have one goal in common: creating fluid, sustainable solutions that support business growth. We come together as one team to deliver transformative results. While we take our work seriously, we never lose our playful spirit, and we pride ourselves on our fun and energetic culture.

Are you looking for an environment where you can be curious, creative and challenge yourself daily?

Today, we’re ready to add a API Evangelists to join our team.  This person is a mix of marketing and engineering. Evangelists know their product in and out, receive feedback from the community, and work to better the product and consumer experience as a whole.  This person will protect the integrity of the data domains, create customer materials to provide usage guidance, give assistance, and spread the good word of our data APIs.

What you will get to do:

  • Understand our consumers – Evangelists must intimately understand the consumers’ needs and help consumers utilize the APIs and the data properly. This is an important role in sustaining and extending a user base.  A critical part of understanding the users is the intake process.  Based on the consumers’ needs, the Evangelist will decompose the work required and properly disposition it.  If gaps exist between current features of the API and the consumers needs, the evangelist will elicit the proper requirements (intent, payload, expected volume data, etc.) to develop an Interface Control Document (ICD)
  • Communicate the value of the product – The next most important role of an evangelist is to efficiently communicate the value of the product. As developers are the lifeblood of APIs, they are the consumers that must be sold on the benefit of your API if they are ever going to use it. This role stems from a technical understanding of the product.
  • An evangelist must always be prepared to communicate value in many situations — whether it is a description for an executive, writing tutorials for developers, or pitching a demo.  A successful API program turns users into evangelists.
  • Ensure the APIs are valuable and usable – Developer Experience (DX) is a focus. As an API evangelist is the bridge from product to community, they must evangelize DX as well.  Always be observing and gathering feedback.  Always be willing to answer people’s questions.
  • Build and maintain a knowledge base – A developer advocate creates content that speaks louder than they could alone. This includes instructive material (data flows, data dictionaries, etc), integration walkthroughs, and shared stories from the developer community. If you have poor or no documentation for your API, most potential customers won’t be able to use it.

What We’d Like to See:

  • 5+ years of technical delivery of backend solutions, preferably master data management
  • Experience working with and developing APIs
  • Experience with modern cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and interest in helping other teams resolve issues
  • Excellent communication skills and interest in educating and supporting consumers
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Self-starter and growth mindset
  • Experience with feature documentation and prioritization tools like JIRA, and Confluence
  • Solves problems in unique ways by drawing from background and experience working in an array of contexts
  • Experience working and driving day-day tasks and goals independently with minimal direction
  • Comfortable working with distributed teams across time-zones
